Broaden your market with a Charbray

With preparations well underway for the Charbray Society’s 32nd National Bull and Female Sale to be held at Gracemere Saleyards on 23 September, the question must be asked; has there ever been a better time to move into Charbrays?

“Breeders want to keep their costs down when it comes to tick control, they want cattle that are going to finish quickly and they want to know they can buy bulls that will withstand the harsher environment,” says well regarded Charbray breeder John Mercer of Kandanga Valley Charolais and Charbray Stud. “If there’s a breed that can meet these objectives, Charbray cattle tick all the boxes.”

With clients located in harder country, John said many had turned to Charbrays because of their ability at withstanding tougher conditions while still being able to produce early finishing progeny. “At the other end of the scale I have a client who uses Charbray bulls over his British bred females to produce vealers for the high end restaurant trade. For him, this has been an excellent move producing more growth and yield in the progeny and fantastic results over the hook,” he said.

All bulls will be vet examined and semen tested prior to the sale with measurable objective data including fat scans, EMA, scrotal measurement and weights recorded at Gracemere Saleyards the day prior to the sale.
